Bernicia and Newcastle United Foundation worked together to deliver Kickstart Your Career at Ashington Hirst Welfare Centre. The programme helps young people in the Ashington area build skills and move into work.
Before joining the programme, Oliver was working four hours a week in a local shop. He wanted more hours, more stability and a role in business administration.
During the programme, Oliver took part in sessions with local employers including Persimmon Homes, AkzoNobel, PGL and Northumbria Police. These sessions helped him learn more about different workplaces and the opportunities available.
With support from Newcastle United Foundation, Oliver updated his CV, completed an online application and prepared for interview. This helped him feel more confident about showing his skills, experience and education.
Oliver then successfully applied for Bernicia’s Business Administrator Apprenticeship.
He says the programme helped improve his communication skills, confidence and self-esteem, and gave him the support he needed to prepare for interview. Oliver is now progressing well in his apprenticeship, showing the difference this partnership can make for young people starting their career.
