Shane's Story

Care leaver Shane is looking forward to moving into his own flat.

He’s earning the Living Wage working for Bernicia and financial stability is opening up new opportunities in his life.

Shane is working with our Estates Services Team, making sure the communities where our tenants live are kept clean and tidy.

Shane is working under the guidance of our Estates Services Team Leader John Green and has quickly established himself as a popular and trusted team member.

He’s one of 14 care leavers seizing the opportunities of tailored skills, employment and training support from Bernicia and Northumberland County Council to move ahead with their lives.

It’s National Care Leavers Month in November, celebrating people who have been looked after by a local authority because of a crisis in their family life.

Bernicia’s Employability Team and its Care Leavers Opportunity Pathway are delivering life-changing results for young people who often have to overcome obstacles in their lives that most people don’t have to.
